A very useful new Capsicum baccatum variety selected from a South American landrace. More compact than most baccatums due to its shorter internode length, it is also earlier and more productive. The ripe chillies are an attractive orange colour, and have a delicious fruity flavour.
The ripe chillies look like a darker variant of Kellu Uchu, but the unripe fruits are much paler and the plants are more compact. It is also more productive, making it a superior alternative to Hot Lemon, Lemon Drop or Russian Yellow.
Madre Vieja is well suited to container growing and performs well in either a 3 litre (below) or a 7.5 litre (right) pot.
Better than Lemon Drop for making sauces as the chillies are much juicier, but equally good for drying of freezing. They also have a smoother shinier skin than most baccatum chillies.
